╰ ☆ his voice is quiet, distant almost, as he lets the words wash over him. he can’t exactly try to defend himself, or Lonnie, or even his mom. It’s true, they were always disappointing someone, but he’d forgiven his mom for that. she was trying her best, trying to make do with she had. Jonathan understands that, he does, that’s why he doesn’t hold it against her that he grew up way too fast. but that’s also why the words about Will hit deeper than anything.
he doesn’t know what happened to Will, and he doesn’t know how to protect him because of that. there’s no telling what he went through and Jonathan is desperate for Will to keep the remaining shreds of innocence that he has left. he wants Will to be a kid, but how can he do that when Jonathan keeps letting him down? and by letting Will down.. he’s letting his mom down. he doesn’t even realize he’s crying before it’s too late and he’s quick to cover his eyes with the heel of his palms, pressing against them as if to try and push the tears back. he needs to toughen up.
